Rare Find: 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle Card on Auction

The world of baseball memorabilia is abuzz with the discovery of a one-of-a-kind treasure – a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card that stands out from the rest. This particular card, now up for auction courtesy of eBay seller Greg Morris, has undergone a remarkable transformation, likely as part of a vintage scrapbook project. Despite its less than pristine condition, its scarcity has captured the interest of collectors and fans alike.

Authenticated by Beckett Grading, this Mantle card has been heavily modified, with significant trimming that has removed a large portion of its iconic background, keeping only a fraction of its bottom and right borders intact. The visible signs of wear and creases on the card suggest its previous cherished status before it underwent this drastic alteration.

Turning the card over reveals additional challenges, as much of the original text is obscured by adhesive residue, indicating a lack of foresight regarding its future value as a collectible item. Despite these alterations, Beckett has classified the piece as Authentic/Altered, with its authentication dating back to 2017. It recently found its way into Morris’s hands through a collection acquired from another auction house.

In a market where even low-grade Mantle cards can fetch substantial prices, this “Half Mantle” version stands out for its distinct modifications. As the auction progresses, there is speculation that this variant could potentially demand a price in the tens of thousands, showcasing the enduring appeal of Mickey Mantle despite its altered state.

While this card may seem like a one-of-a-kind find, it is not the only altered Mantle card to surface. Last year, CSG/CGC highlighted a similarly adjusted Mantle card, displaying a slightly better condition but missing significant parts of its original border and with a back that had been “skinned”.

Despite its unconventional appearance, the intense bidding activity surrounding this unique Mantle card underscores the timeless allure of the baseball legend. Enthusiasts eagerly await the final sale price of this extraordinary piece, as the auction continues to captivate the baseball card collecting community.
