Heritage Icons Photography Auction Unveils Sports Legends’ Signed Images

Heritage Auctions has unveiled a treasure trove of autographed photographs in its latest Icons Photography Auction, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of iconic sports figures. One of the prized possessions up for grabs is a 1948 photo capturing basketball legend George Mikan in action, bearing his signature in blue ink, reminiscent of his 1948 Bowman rookie card. Anticipated to fetch a hefty sum of over $20,000, this 8×10 Type 1 photo is a true gem for sports card collectors.

The theme of signed vintage photos continues to shine through in this auction. A late 1940s photo of Cleveland Browns icon Otto Graham, mirroring his 1950 Bowman Football rookie card, also features his autograph. Similarly, a poignant 1949 photo of Jackie Robinson receiving his Silver Bat for winning the National League batting title, accompanied by his MVP award, stands out. This Type I photo, inscribed to “Jeff,” adds a personalized touch to the collection.

Another captivating piece showcases Robinson clearing out his locker at Ebbets Field in 1957, bidding farewell to his illustrious baseball career. The image captures his Dodgers cap, home jersey, fielder’s glove, cleats, and equipment bag, along with Gil Hodges’ bat in the background. This poignant snapshot is expected to draw significant bids, exceeding $10,000.

Not to be missed is a photo believed to have been used for Willie Mays’ 1952 Topps card, adorned with Mays’ signature from the 1990s, offering a piece of baseball history to eager collectors.

With over 150 vintage images on display, some dating back more than a century, the auction presents a diverse array of sports memorabilia. A standout among these relics is a photo from the 1919 World Series, capturing Black Sox pitcher Eddie Cicotte and Reds’ pitcher Dutch Reuther shaking hands before a fateful game at Redland Field in Cincinnati. Complete with its original paper caption and stamps, this historical piece is expected to kick off bidding at $8,000.

Further enriching the collection are rookie photos of baseball legend Hank Aaron (1954), golf icon Jack Nicklaus (1962), and basketball star Pete Maravich (1970), alongside various images of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and other pre-war sports icons.
